Eli Zabar to Open on Lower East Side

Eli Zabar, owner of Night Shift, E.A.T., Vinegar Factory, Eli’s Market, Eli’s Essentials, and a number of other east side eateries, is teaming up with his son Oliver to open in a new location on Broome Street on the lower east side. The space, between Orchard and Ludlow Streets, was formerly occupied by Lucky Bee, a Thai restaurant, which closed late last year. Zabar has over 45 years in the food business. Manhattan Community Board 3’s SLA committee unanimously welcomed and approved the Zabars for a liquor license after having stymied an attempt last year to open on Mulberry Street. Pastis Redux

Pastis, Keith McNally’s celebrated French bistro, is planning to reopen at 52 Gansevoort Street, a block from its former location. The famed restaurant opened in 1999 as an early entrant in the then seedy Meatpacking District. It was instrumental in transforming the neighborhood, and had a very rich history, bringing a piece of Paris to New York. Pastis closed four years ago when the property was sold and the new owners decided to demolish the building. McNally, a James Beard award winning restauranteur and owner of Balthazar, Augustine, Morandi among others, will partner in the new Pastis with another James Beard award winner, Stephen Starr. Starr’s New York restaurants include Le Cou Cou, Upland, The Clock Tower and Buddakan. The two plan to reopen Pastis in 2019. Bernstein Redo, P.C. is proud to be part of the new Pastis team.

Zero Bond Approved for License

Zero Bond, a private members club for three upper floors in the building at Broadway and Bond Street in Manhattan, was approved this week for a liquor license over the objections of Community Board 2. The brainchild of Scott Sartiano, a former creator and owner of 1OAK and the Butter Group, the members club will feature a restaurant, bowling alley, shared work space and meeting rooms over three floors, with an entrance at 0 Bond Street. The lower floors of the building are occupied by Equinox fitness club. The application received strong support from City Council Speaker Corey Johnson, and Council members Margaret Chin and Rafael Espinol as well as from many residents and the NoHo Bowery Association. Tom Valenti Takes Reins at Oxbow Tavern

Famed chef Tom Valenti has come back to the Upper West Side with the newly opened Oxbow Tavern. Formerly Café Tallulah, the restaurant at 240 Columbus Avenue between 71st and 72nd Streets will be a casual neighborhood spot. Chef Valenti, the author of a number of cookbooks, had for years brought high end dining to the Upper West Side with Ouest, Cesca and The West Branch. 1928 George Washington Reopens as Freehand New York

The recently opened Freehand New York at 23 Lexington Avenue in Flatiron has begun welcoming guests. The hotel, the newest addition to the line of Freehand hotels already operating in Miami, Chicago and Los Angeles, spans an entire city block and contains multiple food and beverage outlets including The George Washington bar, and restaurants The Studio at Freehand and Simon and the Whale. The building, which was originally built as the George Washington hotel in 1928, has been restored to its original details and beauty to once again become a must-visit destination in Manhattan. Scarpetta moves to James New York-NoMad Hotel

After ten years on West 14th Street on the cusp of the Meatpacking District, Scarpetta is moving into the newly designed James New York-NoMad hotel on 29th Street and Madison Avenue. John Meadow’s LDV Hospitality owns Scarpetta, its signature brand, and is taking along chef Jorge Espinoza who started with Scarpetta when it ordinally opened. Scarpetta also has outposts in Montauk, Miami, Las Vegas, Philadelphia and Newport. Bernstein Redo, P.C. is proud to a part of the LDV Hospitality and Scarpetta team.

Camilla Marcus’ West-bourne

The former Navy at 137 Sullivan Street was sold to Camilla Marcus last year and the space has now re-opened as West-bourne. Camilla has worked at Union Square Hospitality Group, as well as other hospitality companies, and is partnering with culinary director Amy Yi of Upland in her new space which features an open kitchen. Through a partnership with the Robin Hood Foundation, one percent of every purchase will go to Soho neighbor the Door, which provides free youth-development services. Salt Bae Opens First NYC Location

Nusret Gökçe, the Turkish celebrity chef known as Salt Bae, opens his first New York restaurant, Nusret Steakhouse, located at 51 West 52nd Street in the former China Grill space. This is only the second location in the United States for the Turkish restaurant chain. As one of the sector’s leaders with its top-quality steaks, Nusret is the number one choice for meat lovers at its many locations in Turkey, Dubai and Abu Dhabi. Coogan’s Lives!

There was celebration over the weekend at famed Irish bar and restaurant Coogan’s. The restaurant, located at 4015 Broadway, which has been a fixture in Washington Heights for over thirty years, had been facing a huge rent increase from its landlord, New York-Presbyterian Hospital. It looked as though Coogan’s was going to close. However, with the assistance of Borough President Gale Brewer, Representative Adriano Espillat, an on-line petition with over 15,000 signatures, and even help from Broadway star Lin-Manuel Miranda, Coogan’s and New York-Presbyterian reached an agreement over the weekend for a new lease. The Roman and Williams Guild

Robin Standefer and husband Stephen Alesch, owners of renowned design firm Roman and Williams, have partnered with James Beard-award-winning restauranteur Stephen Starr to open the Roman and Williams Guild at 53 Howard Street last month. The Starr bakery and restaurant Le Mercerie is located within the Guild retail store, which showcases Roman and Williams furniture and other designs. This is a continuation of their long collaboration, as Roman and Williams designed Starr’s Upland and Le Coucou restaurants, and other notable restaurants and hotels in New York.
